Here are the basics for glowing, natural beauty:

Get your zz’s –  The first step of your daily beauty routine should be getting out of bed well-rested. It’s called beauty sleep for a reason! Research shows that a lack of sleep shows itself on our faces–skin sags, and dark circles begin to appear under the eyes. Your body repairs itself while you sleep, and your skin is no exception.

Eat wholesome, nutritious foods – Veggies, fruits, whole grains, lean protein–these are the building blocks for your body and if you aren’t getting enough, it’ll show. Protein builds strong hair follicles, vitamin E keeps your skin smooth and moisturized, Vitamin C supports blood circulation and gives your skin that healthy glow, and fiber flushes toxins out of your body and keeps you trim. All of these benefits plus countless others can be found in whole foods such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products. Vary it up so your body gets all that it needs to stay running smoothly. Avoid processed foods that are usually high in saturated fat and sugar. And don’t forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day!

Get moving – We all know the benefits of exercising regularly–it keeps your body toned and energized and leads to a greater sense of happiness because of the endorphins released. But exercise also improves blood circulation and helps hair grow healthier and stronger. More oxygen is supplied to cells throughout your body, which is great because when skin cells don’t get enough oxygen, it can look tired and worn-out; this is similar to the effect that not getting enough sleep has on the quality of your skin. And exercise will help you sleep better too! Just don’t do it in the evenings.

Wind down – Prolonged periods of stress not only take a toll on your mental clarity and health, but on your body as well. Stress can bring about acne and cause sleeping troubles. It can also make you feel tired, give you headaches, stomach upset, and muscle tension. Stress can also lead to changes in appetite such as overeating, which can lead to weight gain. All of these things prevent you from feeling and looking your best. Meditation, a warm bath, aromatherapy, or sometimes something as simple as watching a comedy can work wonders!

Treat yourself to a massage. Massage helps to de-stress and relax muscles in the body. But that’s not all it can do. Massages improve blood circulation by stimulating the skin which means healthier, glowing skin all around. If you don’t want to splurge on a fancy professional massage, give yourself one! Massage your scalp for healthier hair, massage your feet for relaxation, or give your neck a good rub to wind down at the end of the day.

Beauty is a reflection of how well you’re maintaining your body on the inside–when you feel strong, healthy, relaxed and energized, it shows. So make sure you’re taking good care of yourself. Get enough sleep, eat healthy and nutritious meals, exercise, reduce stress and pamper yourself once in a while–your body will thank you!
